Sony Corporation Japan that sue Sony-ak.com for trademark breach is apologizing to the Indonesian website owner Sony Kurniawan on Tuesday (16/03/2010)
In the meeting that was also attended by representative from Sony Corporation Japan as well as Sony Indonesia CEO Koji Wakaizumi, Sony Corp apologized and withdrawing the suit.
It was reported before that Sony Corp Japan was suing Sony-ak.com for trademark breach and has asked the website owner to close his website and drop the domain name via email because the address on the domain information was no longer valid.
The website owner claimed that the website is his full name registered in 2003 and in no way breaching any trademark. He said that he has been using the domain to spread IT knowledge. This site was awarded the best website in educational category for 2003, 2004 and 2006 by PC Magazine Indonesia.
Sony Indonesian was only acting as mediator only says that the suit came directly from Sony Corp Japan. The reason was that the domain in question was too similar and has similar looks with Sony domain that potentially could cause confusion to Sony’s customers.
“There are plenty of holes in this case,” Says Rully Wahyudi an IT practitioner when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday (10/03/2010). “People need to understand that trademark existed to protect business owner as well as customers. It is there so that person A could not just pretend to be person B and get away with it. Now, let’s look at this case, visually they (the websites) looks miles apart. Sony-ak.com do not sell electronic gadget which is Sony Corp main business, heck, the guy don’t even monetize his site. I really question the guy at Sony Corp that came up with this idea” added Rully.
Sony-ak.com it self has experiencing a huge traffic surge since the lawsuit began. The site is sometimes showing error and very slow to access. The owner now has a disclaimer that says “Sonny AK Knowledge Center is not related to or affiliated in any way with Sony Corporation Japan” on his website to show his good faith.
