The President’s Son Father In Law is Now Officially an Inmate

Former Deputy Governor of Indonesia Central Bank (BI) Aulia Pohan which happens to be the Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) son father in law is now officially a Salemba Jail inmate. The prosecutor from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) took Aulia from his temporary holding cell to Salemba jail on Friday (09/04/2010)

Aulia Pohan was previously incarcerated in Kelapa Dua Mobile Brigade prison in Depok. “It is correct, we are now on our way to execute the court order” said the KPK attorney Rudi Margono to Tribunnews.com

KPK court order execution was carried out since the verdict for Aulia Pohan has been passed down. Haryono who is currently acting as a caretaker for the KPK also confirmed the execution. According to him the prosecutors have reported that Aulia Pohan et al conviction has been finalized. “But the actual timing is decided by the prosecutor themselves,” he asserted.

The Indonesian High Court sentenced Aulia Pohan to four years and five months incarceration. That decision was later appealed to the Supreme Court on March 15, 2010 which lessens the term to three years in prison minus time already served.

The Supreme Court is of the opinion that Aulia Pohan et al were proven guilty on the primary corruption charges together as stated on Clause 2 Law No 31 year 1999 regarding corruption eradication. The sentenced was reduced because it was a collective action of those defendants. The Supreme Court also fined Aulia Pohan Rp 200 million (USD 20,000).

Aulia Pohan request for consideration was rejected by the Supreme judges.

Aulia Pohan was arrested by KPK on November 27, 2008 after his name was mentioned during the trial of Burhanuddin Abdullah about flow of Rp 100 billions (USD 10 millions) to the members of the House of Representatives during the 1999-2004 period. As one of the Central Bank top brass at that time, Aulia Pohan was one of the people that approve the transaction.

This really shows SBY hard liner position against corruption in Indonesia. Never before someone with even a tiny bit relation to the first family has ever been sent to prison.

There are some people with the opinion that SBY intentionally sacrifice Aulia to increase his popularity. “Would I sacrifice my own family? I think this is not our way,” the president says during Ring Politic show in Jakarta.
