The Indonesian doctor who performed so many abortion that he has been dubbed as the “Abortion King” by the police have now been arrested again as a result of ironically refusing to abort an over three months old fetus.
Dr Edward Armando (66 yrs old) was arrested by Sidoarjo Police Precinct last Tuesday. “It is estimated that since January 2008 alone up until the time of arrest the doctor has performed more than 2,000 abortions”, says the Sidoarjo Police Chief M Iqbal at a press conference regarding the arrest.
In his confession to the police Dr Edward admitted to have received somewhere between 20 to 25 patients every week. The fee charged for his service varies depending on the financial ability of the patients. If the patients came from poor families then the maximum charges will only be USD 50.

“Those people say they can not afford to go to specialist, that’s why I helped them” says Edward.
Some people pay more than that because the illegality surrounding the practice have created some sort of underground network of brokerage which sometimes charges more than the actual service performed by Dr Edward itself.
Dr Edward is pretty famous in the underground abortion world especially in Sidoarjo. Since opening his shop in 1995 he had allegedly helped thousands of patients. He has been warned by the Health Department twice, been arrested by the police three times and in fact had been jailed for one year for the practice. All of those did not deter the doctor.
Edward argues that he had to help when visited by his patients. Usually couples wants to abort the pregnancy because of their financial hardship. “They came saying they could not afford anymore children, they have followed family planning but they still managed to get pregnant. Those kinds of people that use my service mostly” says Edward.
When arrested by the Sidoarjo police, Edward had just finished aborting 10 patients, 5 in the morning and 5 in the afternoon.
The arrest came when the police was trying to uncover the death of Suparlina last January. Suparlina was found dead at the Sidoarjo hospital from heavy bleeding and was left by her company.
The suspicious hospital nurses alerted the police which then arrested Nining Dwi Hariyanti which admitted to take the victim to the hospital on a request of her sisters Nunung Saja Rahayu. Further investigation showed that Suparlina was having her abortion with the help of Nunung aka Atik.
Nunung was then also arrested with her husband when they were trying to sell their car to funds their escape in Dae Lamando, Central Kalimantan.
So what does Nunung has to do with Dr Edward? Turns out Suparlina visited Dr Edwards before she sees Nunung. Dr Edward turned Suparlina away because her pregnancy is already more than three months old.
Abdul Munip who worked for Dr Edward directed Suparlina and her families to Nunung without the knowledge of Dr Edward.
The Police then bumped in into Dr Edward practice in the process of investigation and nabbed the Abortion King.
